//01Dashboard warning lights
Sound familiar?
If any of these lights are on, it's time for a pit stop. These are the situations we help with every season.
- You haven't filed in a year or moreOne missed year can quickly become three. The sooner you start, the simpler it is.
- CRA letters are piling upRequests to file, notices of assessment you don't recognize, or collection letters.
- Your benefit payments stoppedThe Canada child benefit and GST/HST credit depend on your returns being filed.
- Slips and receipts are missingWe can retrieve CRA slip data and rebuild records from your bank statements.
- You were self-employed and fell behindDrivers, contractors and commission earners often have no tax withheld, so balances build up.
- Your corporation missed filingsUnfiled T2 returns, GST returns or annual returns can affect your company's good standing.
Penalties and interest add up
If you owe, late-filing penalties apply and interest on unpaid balances compounds daily.
Money may be waiting for you
Some people who fall behind are actually owed refunds or benefits, but some refunds have time limits.
The CRA can assess you anyway
The CRA can assess a year based on the information it has, which may not include your deductions.

//03Relief options
Ways to lighten the load.
Depending on your situation, there may be ways to reduce what you owe or spread it out. We'll tell you honestly what's realistic.
Voluntary Disclosures Program
The CRA's VDP lets you correct past non-compliance and may reduce penalties and interest, especially if you come forward before the CRA contacts you.
Penalty & interest relief
In some situations, such as serious illness, hardship or circumstances beyond your control, the CRA can cancel or waive penalties and interest.
Payment arrangements
If you owe more than you can pay at once, the CRA may agree to a payment plan. We'll help you put a realistic proposal together.
Eligibility for any relief program depends on your circumstances and is decided by the CRA.
//04Back tax FAQ
Questions people ask us most.
How many years back can you file?
As many as you need. There's no general cut-off for filing a late personal return. Some refunds and relief requests do have time limits, so it's worth starting sooner rather than later.
I've lost my slips and receipts. Can you still help?
Yes. With your authorization we can access the slip information the CRA has on file, and we can rebuild business income and expenses from bank and credit card statements.
Will I have to pay penalties?
It depends. The CRA's late-filing penalty is based on the balance owing, so if you're due a refund for a year, there's usually no late-filing penalty. If you owe, penalties and interest apply, but relief may be available in some situations. We'll review your options with you.
The CRA has already sent me letters. Is it too late?
No. Bring every letter you've received. We'll explain what each one means, prioritize anything urgent, and once authorized we can deal with the CRA on your behalf.
What is the Voluntary Disclosures Program?
The CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP) lets taxpayers correct past non-compliance and may provide relief from some penalties and interest, especially when you come forward before the CRA contacts you. We'll help you decide whether it's the right route for you.
