Frequently asked questions.
Straight answers to the questions we hear most. Don't see yours? Ask us. There's no such thing as a silly tax question.
Getting started
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. We work by appointment so you get our full attention. Request a time online or call us and we'll find a slot that works for you.
Where are you located?
Our office is at 7013 Ogden Road SE, Calgary, Alberta. Call ahead and we'll make sure someone is ready for you.
What should I bring to my first meeting?
Bring photo ID, your Social Insurance Number, last year's notice of assessment if you have it, any tax slips (T4, T4A, T5 and so on), receipts for deductions, and any letters from the CRA. Missing something? Come anyway. We can often retrieve slip information from the CRA once you authorize us.
Do you work with businesses outside of trucking, construction and sales?
Absolutely. We serve clients in every industry. Trucking, construction, auto sales and commission sales are simply where many of our clients come from, so we know those areas especially well.
Back taxes
How many years back can you file?
As many as you need. There's no general cut-off for filing a late personal return. Some refunds and relief requests do have time limits, so it's worth starting sooner rather than later.
I've lost my slips and receipts. Can you still help?
Yes. With your authorization we can access the slip information the CRA has on file, and we can rebuild business income and expenses from bank and credit card statements.
Will I have to pay penalties?
It depends. The CRA's late-filing penalty is based on the balance owing, so if you're due a refund for a year, there's usually no late-filing penalty. If you owe, penalties and interest apply, but relief may be available in some situations. We'll review your options with you.
The CRA has already sent me letters. Is it too late?
No. Bring every letter you've received. We'll explain what each one means, prioritize anything urgent, and once authorized we can deal with the CRA on your behalf.
What is the Voluntary Disclosures Program?
The CRA's Voluntary Disclosures Program (VDP) lets taxpayers correct past non-compliance and may provide relief from some penalties and interest, especially when you come forward before the CRA contacts you. We'll help you decide whether it's the right route for you.
Business & corporate
Do you do bookkeeping and payroll as well as taxes?
Yes. We offer bookkeeping, payroll and GST filing alongside personal, business and corporate tax returns, so everything is handled by one team.
When do I need to register for GST?
Generally once your taxable sales pass $30,000 over four consecutive calendar quarters. You can also register voluntarily before then, which is sometimes worth doing. We'll help you decide.
Should I incorporate my business?
It depends on your income, how much you take out of the business, and your plans. Incorporating can reduce tax and limit liability, but it adds cost and paperwork. We'll run the numbers for your situation.
Commission & sales
I sell cars on commission. Can I deduct expenses?
Possibly. Commission employees can deduct certain expenses, such as advertising, promotion, cell phone and some vehicle costs, if their employer signs Form T2200. Keep your receipts and a vehicle logbook, and we'll handle the rest.
Do I need to keep a vehicle logbook?
If you plan to claim vehicle expenses, yes. A logbook showing business and personal kilometres is the best support for your claim if the CRA asks.
